What is an online home cover policy?
An online home cover policy provides customers with insurance for their home, and will protect both their contents and the structure of their home. A typical online home cover policy will provide insurance against fire, theft, water damage, flooding, storm damage and vandalism.
Most online home cover policies are broken down into smaller policies within one bigger policy, and the two most common parts to an online home cover policy buildings cover and contents cover.
Online home cover policy – buildings cover
The buildings cover element of an online home cover policy provides customers with insurance for the structure of their home, and any built in objects within the home. Whilst it does not cover carpet, your buildings cover will insure your walls, floors, roof, windows, doors and kitchen units and worktops, bathroom suites and any built in wardrobes. It will also insure any external buildings, like a garage and shed, and will cover your external walls, gates, fences and doors around your property.
Not every customer will need the buildings cover element of an online home cover policy, with those who rent their homes often only needing to insure the contents, as the buildings cover is the landlord’s responsibility.
Online home cover policy – contents cover
The contents cover element of an online home cover policy provides insurance for the contents of the home, and includes carpets, furniture, furnishings, like the lampshades, pictures on the walls and mirrors around the home, as well as all of your belongings in the home. Your contents cover also covers your fridge, freezer and the contents of those, as well as the contents of your kitchen cupboards.
One of the biggest mistakes customers make when taking out an online home cover policy is underestimating the value of the contents of their home, with many customers not adding everything up properly, or realising the cost to replace certain items.
We advise moving from room to room, adding up one room at a time, and including everything in the room. Pay particular attention to wardrobes and shoe cupboards which can hide thousands of pounds worth of belongings.
